Flower Girls Flower Girls make an adorable addition to the wedding party. Aged four to eight, she walks down the aisle alone, with the ring bearer, or with a second flower girl. She immediately precedes the bride, following the maid or matron of honor. Flower girls often wear
floor length, ankle or tea length dresses, patterned after the bridesmaid gowns. However, most any frilly, party dress will do when in a complimentary color to the wedding party. Today, many flower girls are dressed as miniature brides in beautiful white, flowing gowns. This is very popular for brides whose young daughters serve as their flower girl. It makes the child feel as pretty and special as her mother, the bride. (Also see "What to Wear for
OurMarriage.com") In old England, a small girl would sprinkle fresh flowers along the pathway, before the bride. This meant the bride would enjoy a rosy life. (Also see "Old World Customs and Traditions") For safety's sake, since rose petals can be slippery, most flower girls now carry a small nosegay or basket of flowers. White gloves, a floral or ribbon head wreath and white or pastel party shoes complete the ensemble If the wedding ceremony will be
longer than 15 minutes, it is suggested a small, padded stool, wrapped in white satin and lace, be placed to the side of the altar, next to where the maid/matron of honor will stand. The flower girl traditionally stands beside the honor attendant during the ceremony. If she becomes tired or restless, the child may be seated through the ceremony. During the recessional, she will follow the bride and groom back up the aisle, leading the parade of
attendants. |
